Lesson 4.1: your brand as an entity.

0:05What an entity is

To an AI engine, your brand isn't a logo: it's a set of connected facts. Name, what you do, location, people, services, and how long you've been around. If those facts are the same everywhere, the engine recognizes you. If they differ, it picks which one to believe, and sometimes it picks the wrong one.

0:26Where the facts come from

The good news is that you manage most of these sources yourself. According to an October 2025 analysis by Yext, your own website makes up 44% of the sources AI engines cite when they talk about a business, and local listings, like Google Business Profile and directories, another 42%.

0:46Consistency

The first job is consistency: the same name, address and phone number, everywhere. A typical example: the right phone number on the Contact page, and an old one in the footer and on an industry directory. The engine finds two numbers, and has to choose. That's how errors end up in the answers.

1:06Mentions matter

And then there's what other people say about you. In an Ahrefs analysis of 75,000 brands, brand mentions across the web were linked to showing up in AI Overviews about three times more than backlinks. It's a correlation, not a cause. But it says one thing clearly: being named, consistently, matters.

1:28Ask the AI

To find out how they see you, ask them: what do you know about this business? Read the answer carefully: what it says about you, and where it gets it from. Every error has a source. Find it, and fix it there.

1:42Your task for today

Your task for today: write down your official facts. Name, what you do, location, phone, founding year, people, services. Compare them in five places: your website, Google Business Profile, social media, and two directories. Then ask three AI assistants what they know about you, and write down the errors you find.

2:16Next lesson

In the next lesson: the About page, and the fact sheet. See you there.
