Re-measuring your AI citations without fooling yourself

Lesson 9.1 of the free AEO and GEO course: why a single AI answer tells you nothing, how to re-measure your citations in AI engines with the same questions, the same engines and the same rules, how often to do it, how to compare with your baseline, and three rules so you don't fool yourself.

The video for this lesson is coming soon to YouTube. Meanwhile, the full transcript is right here.

Lesson 9.1: re-measuring the right way.

0:05One measurement isn't enough

You've done the work. Now you want to know if it worked. The risk is looking at a single answer, and believing it. SparkToro had six hundred volunteers repeat the same questions. The AI engines gave the same list of brands less than once in a hundred times. And according to Ahrefs, the content of Google's AI Overviews changes every 2.15 days on average. So visibility in AI isn't a position. It's a frequency: how many answers you show up in, across many questions, repeated over time.

0:38The same conditions

To compare, you need the same conditions as the first time. The same questions, without changing a single one. The same engines. The same rules: a new chat for every question, memory off, the same city. And all on the same day, with the date written down.

0:56How often

How often? A good starting point is once a month, with a review of the plan every three months. Repeat your key questions two or three times, and note if you show up always, sometimes, or never. And judge the trend over three to six months. One month alone can be noise.

1:15How to compare

To compare, go back to the citation share from Lesson 2.4: how many answers you appear in, out of the total of questions times engines. Put it next to your baseline, engine by engine. And look at who still wins in your place. That's often where your next job is.

1:33Don't fool yourself

Three rules to keep you honest. One: don't change the questions to push the number up. Two: don't celebrate, and don't panic, over a single month. Three: don't take credit for everything. The engines change too, as you saw with Reddit in Lesson 8.1. Write down what you did and when, and let the series of measurements speak.

1:55Your task for today

Your task for today: run the second audit by hand, with the same questions, the same engines and the same rules as the first. Record the results in the Before and after tab, next to your baseline, with the date.

2:25Next lesson

In the next lesson: AI traffic, in Google Analytics and in Search Console. See you there.

Your task

Run the second audit by hand, with the same questions, the same engines and the same rules as the first. Record the results in the Before and after tab, next to your baseline, with the date.

Track it in the course worksheet.
